Bariatric Surgery
Is Surgery Right for You?
The decision to undergo bariatric surgery must ultimately be a commitment to healthy living. Success after surgery depends upon your dedication to proper nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes. The decision to move forward is made only after the medical team has performed a thorough evaluation and reached consensus.
To be considered as a surgical candidate, individuals must meet certain criteria:
- Be between age 18 and 65
- Have a body mass index of 40 or above OR have a body mass index of 35-40 with significant associated health problems, such as diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnea
- Have made documented attempts in the past to lose weight
- Are committed to a healthy lifestyle that includes a regular exercise program for the rest of life
- Do not have alcohol or chemical abuse issues
- Do not have an untreated psychiatric condition as determined by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist
- Understand and are able to comply with instructions and program guidelines
- Understand and accept the risks of weight loss surgery
- Have supportive family and friends who will help you achieve a healthy weight goal
- Agree to be part of long-term follow-up
Calculate your body mass index (BMI)
BMI is a measurement of obesity, based on your height and weight. It gives a good indication of whether your weight is healthy for your height. The higher the BMI, the more your health is at risk.
